Readers may have noticed on Jan. 18 that many popular websites were either fully or partially blacked out. These household-name domains — including Google, Wikipedia, Reddit — did so in protest of two bills before U.S. Congress, legislation which could alter negatively how people use the Internet.

Indians 5-5 at halfway point

North Haven High School boys’ varsity hockey won 2 of 3 games over the past week to improve their overall record to 5-5, halfway through the 2011-12 season. Roadblocks to a winning record have been injuries to key players and several close losses in overtime.

Sons and Daughters Fashion Show

The North Haven Sons & Daughters of Italy Lodge 2805 recently sponsored a Fashion Show held at Fantasia Restaurant. A portion of the proceeds for the show were donated to the Y-ME Breast Cancer Support Group. A check was presented to Doretta Sackville of Y-ME (pictured on right) by the fashion show committee chair MaryEllen Vollano (pictured on left). Y-ME offers one on one support for those afflicted and their families, “Because no one should face breast cancer alone.” Y-ME’s info line is 1-800-221-2141.

Church, government and children celebrate MLK Day together

The moment was emblematic of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Speaking before over three dozen children seated in pews at St. John’s Episcopal Church, the Reverend Matt Lincoln asked the youthful audience which schools they all attended. Kids of various races answered with education institutions from all over the area, including North Haven, Durham, Hamden, Middletown and New Haven.

Don’t wait until yours breaks down. This might happen during a winter storm. You could be without heat and the repair might be more costly than annual maintenance.
