Health Care Increase

The Jan. 20 Board of Finance topics included lowering the projected deficit and an increase in next year’s town side budget.

The first Board of Finance meeting of the new administration discussed North Haven’s future challenges as the town continues to move forward in an uncertain economy.

If North Haven wants a town meeting to vote on budgetary transfers, the town will have to seek legal action in superior court, according to Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal.

The town has $123,000 in surplus at the closing of the 2008-2009 fiscal year, as a $500,000 shortfall in revenues was more than matched by a $623,000 shortfall in expenses. The extra $123,000 was added to the town’s fund balance, which currently stands at $10.1 million.

The Board of Finance passed the town budget Wednesday for vote at referendum, despite lingering questions about the Engineer II position, Bob Burns, and the fund balance.
