Division leading North Haven football pounded Jonathan Law 46-13 on Nov. 13, behind a 25-point outpouring in the first half.

The Friday match up was played in windy and rainy weather, which seemed to affect extra point attempts early in the game. North Haven’s kickoff was returned by the Lawmen to their 33-yard line. On the first play of the game, Indian safety Brian Maratea intercepted Lawman quarterback Ryan Falaguerra at midfield and took the pick to the visitor’s 29-yard line.

After an Indian three-and-out, Falaguerra was again intercepted by Indian Brandon Devlin, who returned the ball to the visitors’ 25-yard line. North Haven would take advantage of their second opportunity. On the first play of the drive, quarterback Joe Schwab found Mark Zurlis up the middle with a textbook pass. Behind perfect blocking, Zurlis went untouched for the score. The extra point was missed, and the score remained 6-0.

Undaunted, Jonathan Lawmen Chris Ballas took North Haven’s kickoff all the way back for a touchdown. Jonathan Law also missed the extra point and the score evened 6-6.

After North Haven pushed to their 36-yard line, Kendrick Amaker took a handoff and turned the left corner. He sprinted 64 yards down the sideline for the 12-6 lead, as North Haven once again missed the extra point.

After a Lawmen three-and-out, North Haven proceeded across midfield. Amaker again took a handoff and turned the corner, racing 45 yards for the score, leaping into the end zone over a diving defensive player. North Haven missed the extra point again, and the score remained 18-6.

On the visitor’s next possession, linebacker Joe Williams stripped Falaguerra of the ball, and Devlin recovered the fumble. Set up nicely on the Lawmen’s 31-yard line, Schwab eventually busted through the middle on a keeper for the score. North Haven completed the extra point and led 25-6 with a minute remaining in the first quarter.

Neither team scored in the second quarter, although Falaguerra was again picked off, this time by linebacker Billy Zullo.

Jonathan Law kicked off to open the second half. North Haven pushed the chains to the visitor’s 20-yard line, behind strong efforts from running back and captain Ryan Criscio, running back Nate Alleyne, Schwab, and Amaker. In the red zone, Schwab passed to Nick Melillo for a touchdown, and the extra point put North Haven up 32-6.

Indian lineman and kicker Anthony Chia booted the next kickoff straight into an unsuspecting Lawmen blocker. North Haven recovered the ball, and Criscio, Alleyne, Schwab, and Amaker combined to carry the ball to Jonathan Law’s 4-yard line. Schwab scored again on another keeper up the middle.

Leading 39-6 in the fourth quarter, North Haven brought in its bench players in good sportsmanship. Regardless, Alleyne and Indian reserves Stephen Cusano and Mike Ross pushed to the red zone, where reserve back Mike Romano scampered into the end zone. The extra point made it 46-6.

With captain and lineman Corey Berrios loudly cheering from the sideline, the reserve North Haven defenders forced a three-and-out. North Haven’s next drive ended in a fumble at their opponent’s 40-yard line.

Finally, as the fourth quarter wound down, Patterson and Falaguerra brought the ball deep into North Haven territory. Facing fourth-and-six, Patterson broke through the middle for the score. All that remained in the 46-13 North Haven victory was a kickoff and Indian kneel downs.

The victory pushed North Haven’s record to 6-3, and 3-0 in the division. Jonathan Law fell to 3-6 with the loss. The Indian varsity football squad will travel to face the 2-6 Amity Regional Spartans on Nov. 25.
