In a bright, cheery, newly renovated dining room at the Joyce C. Budrow Senior Center, a large group of seniors recently enjoyed a delicious pizza party that served as a welcome back celebration to their newly renovated senior center on Pool Road. The gathering was also a special “thank you” to the seniors for all they do for the community of North Haven.

“Today’s pizza party was hosted by me as a way to thank the seniors for their love, service and devotion to North Haven, and as a welcome back to a place many of them call their second home,” stated Vern E. Carlson, a North Haven resident and businessman. “I donated all the pizzas for lunch, and I wanted those in attendance to have a wonderful time. It’s a pleasure to give something back to the seniors who give so much to this town.”

More than 75 people attended the luncheon. The room was filled with laughter, smiling faces, interesting conversations, and a reunion of longtime friends.

“The pizzas were delicious and made at Antonio’s Restaurant located on Washington Avenue. There was a nice variety. There was something for everyone,” replied Sue Jung, program coordinator at the center. “For dessert the seniors were treated Klondike Bars, which were a big favorite.”

While they ate, the seniors talked about the beautiful renovations at the center. Carlson, along with Jung and members of the staff at the center and a handful of volunteers, served the lunch and made sure that everyone had plenty to eat. Also, senior member Jack Roche entertained the audience by visiting the various tables and telling funny jokes that brought laughter and smiles.

“Laughter is good medicine and it doesn’t cost anything,” stated Roche with a smile. “What better way to top off this delicious meal than with a good joke or two.”

The seniors were visited by First Selectman Michael Freda who stopped by all the tables, greeting and conversing with everyone.

“I really like the layout and design of the building. The additional rooms allow for more interaction and concentrated activities,” remarked Freda. “The bright and cheerful rooms create a welcoming and peaceful presence. I really enjoy talking to the seniors because they are from the same generation as my mother and father with so many stories and great memories that are the foundations for, not only North Haven, but all communities,” added Freda.

“I came here today to be with my friends and the staff of the center. Everyone here is so pleasant and kind,” said Mary Civitello, a longtime member. “This was a wonderful gathering and a nice way to welcome back everyone to a place we all love. A very sincere thanks to Mr. Carlson for having this event.”

“We are fortunate to have this beautiful place. I enjoy getting out of the house and spending time with people and doing activities. It keeps my mind busy and I have a good time,” replied John Berardi, a fairly new member and town resident. “We are grateful to the American Legion Hall for serving as a temporary place while the center was undergoing renovations. I had a great time today like every day at the center.”

After lunch, some seniors stayed to speak with First Selectman Freda and others engaged in playing bingo, which is a favorite afternoon game at the center. Those playing listened diligently to senior member George Creamer Sr. calling out numbers and letters. In between games, laughter could be heard throughout the beautifully renovated center.

“This was truly a super welcome back party that turned a rainy, cold and cloudy day into a perfect day,” replied Jung. “It was a day to celebrate while eating pizza and ice cream with a terrific group of men and women — our wonderful seniors.”
